Life in the Black City at Scarborough is hard on everyone, and Meg is no different. She is pale and drawn from overwork and not enough nourishment in her diet. For most of the other workers, it is hard to find something to smile about, yet Meg is very different.
Meg is a hopeless romantic and dreamer. She listens to all of the gossip and stories that seep into the City and spends her time dreaming of what life outside the high wall would be like. Her favorite stories are those of the Hooded Man and his wife The Violet Witch, she yearns to know more about them, and when two woodsmen from outside the walls find their way to her father's house, she is delighted to sit and listen to what they tell her of Runestone. It matters not that she has been told by her father not to have conversations from those who live away from the enclosed city.
The people of the city are fearful and scared of sticking out their necks, and when the Hooded Man sends aid to the City in the form of Lee Sherman, Meg is the one who volunteers and begs her father to allow her to be his guide.
Meg becomes great friends with Lee, who she sees as her hero and mentor. She is good with a bow, and Lee gives her extra lessons with the sword, although he does try to keep her well out of harms way. Beside Lee, Meg becomes a vital part of the resistance movement growing within the Black city walls.
