Peter Warren is very much a loner. His small church in the heart of the vast Black city at Scarborough is surrounded by the desolate lives of the work force of Mason Knox. His Sunday service is the only time he is surrounded by people, and it is a very well attended church. For the rest of his time, he is dedicated to the research of the works of Column Cille, a Celtic monk who managed to balance and unite those of many faiths during the early medieval period, using a blend of Pagan and Christian belief.
He was ordained in Sunderland, long before the formation of the The New Governing Church of England, a church funded and rebuilt by Mason Knox. He was given his parish church and moved in to help the lives of those who suffered around him. His solitary life is made more difficult by the daily brutality he is forced to witness, and at times he kneels by his altar at night and prays for the help to change the lives of those around him.
The arrival of three woodsmen at his church late one night makes him feel like his prayers have been answered, as takes them into his church and hides them for the resistance movement.
Father warren is a kind and generous man who gives all he can for those around him and thinks nothing of his own needs. He is pale and drawn like all his parishioners, but that is due mainly to the fact he seldom goes out in the sunlight, choosing to spend his time working on his notes.
The arrival of Runestone comes as quite a shock, when he realises much of his work is tied into the life of her family.
